History

The Solid Rock Singers is a youth choir from the Coon Rapids United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. The choir started the fall of 1992 after our directors decided that our Kids Praise Choir was too big. Cindi and Kari decided to split & make a new choir with the middle school and high school youth.

In the beginning we were the Coon Rapids United Methodist Youth Choir. Our new name came during our 1993-94 season after we sang the musical, "Let's Go To The Rock."  From that point on we have been known as, the "Solid Rock Singers."

Our first year, we had 18 youth in the choir ranging from 5th grade to 12th grade. Currently we have about 40-50 youth registered from 6th grade to 12th grade, and even a few college young adults still hanging around. It's a hard group to leave once you've been here!

We started in 1992 going to two different churches, other than our own, to share our musical message. We've been back to Mora UMC and Cedar UMC every year since then, and have visited many more churches along the way.

Besides our regular "on the road" services throughout the year, we started in 1997, doing a longer road trip in the summer. That year we took a 3 day road trip to northwestern Minnesota. We sang in 3 different churches and helped at the Salvation Army with flood relief in Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

In 1998 our trip was extended by a day, and in the 4 days we traveled to Southern Minnesota, including Mankato, Rochester, Stewartville, and Le Sueur.

1999's Road Trip was a totally new experience for the group. We took 68 youth and 38 adults to Colorado for a 9 day music and mission trip. Some of the places we sang at include: Focus on the Family; United States Air Force Academy Chapel; YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch in Winter Park, Colorado; Messiah Lutheran Church in Ralston, Nebraska; First United Methodist Church of Castle Rock, Colorado; and Christ United Methodist Church in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Our vision for our trip in 2000 came from an experience on Road Trip '98.  A few of the choir members spent a long time in one of the vans having an impromptu Bible study.  They talked about God's plan for the choir and also for their lives.  Take your Bible and read from Romans 12, verse 6-8.  God put in the hearts of the Solid Rock Singers the urge to serve and to use their talents to their maximum ability.  In June of 2000, we found ourselves on an airplane to California, and then in vans to Mexico to serve at the Miracle Ranch Children's Home and to sing wherever we could from churches in Mexico and California, to the streets and soccer fields of Mexico - it was an UNBELIEVABLE and AWESOME experience!

In July of 2001 we were awed again by God's grace as well as some true southern hospitality.  We ventured to Bartlett, Tennessee with our music ministry to share our new musical, I Could Sing of His Love Forever, with our Friends in the Faith.  Bartlett's youth choir had visited us in Coon Rapids during June of 2000, and the youth in the two groups made connections.  It was awesome to rekindle those new friendships that some had kept going throughout the year.

Our Road Trip 2002 - was to South Dakota in June.  We had a very exciting time sharing our musical, "Created for This," as well as a spending a few days doing some mission work on the Indian Reservation.  We also were honored to be able to sing at Mount Rushmore.

2003 took the Solid Rock Singers on a whirl-wind adventure to New York City!  Along the way, we stopped in Indiana and Pennsylvania.  We sang in Hoboken, New Jersey, and on Long Island.  We visited Ground Zero; helped plant gardens, paint a house and clean it up for mission work; got to be on Good Morning America; and let our lights shine as we toured Broadway, Times Square and Central Park.

Road Trip 2004 brought us out to Michigan working with Habitat for Humanity and singing in many communities.  We spent a day on Mackinac Island and enjoyed singing in many churches and even worshipping outdoors at a park.  We now have great friends in the faith in Michigan!

2005 brought us to Des Moines and St Louis - June 24-30th.  Take a moment and check out the pictures from our trip in our photo album.  We had a WONDERFUL trip, and have many stories to share about the amazing college students who hosted our youth in Des Moines, Iowa and also the incredible works of mission going on in St. Louis.  Soon we will post some of our stories and testimonies of how God worked in our lives and in our hearts during the week of our most recent Music and Missions Road Trip!

God has blessed the members and adult leaders of this choir again as we returned to the Miracle Ranch Children's Home in Valle Las Palmas, Mexico in 2006.  After six years of dreaming, praying and raising money, we made it back to this wonderful place where we worked alongside the directors and staff at the ranch with several building projects.  We also had the incredible joy of teaching Vacation Bible School to children on the ranch as well as children of the Valle Las Palmas.  We found ourselves worshipping with members of a couple of churches in Tecate who truly touched our lives.  We thank the Lord for the opportunity to serve and to minister in such ways that also teach us more about life than we could ever dream of passing off to others on a trip like this.  GOD IS GOOD! ALL THE TIME!

Please continue to keep us in your prayers for safe travel and for God to work through each and every one of the singers and their adult helpers as we go into the world to...

LET OUR LIGHTS SHINE!!!
